Knight Riders took a huge gamble when they decided not to retain the star player. Gautam Gambhir had been an integral part of the KKR squad since 2011 and since then had led them to two grand title victories, in 2012 and 2014.

2. Hashim Amla

South African opener Hashim Amla is considered as one of the most successful and master of the modern cricket. Particularly, he is a specialist in Tests and ODI’s. But last season he shocked everyone with his excellent performance in this short format of cricket.

Scoring 420 runs in just 10 matches, not many would have expected this kind of performance from Amla in T20 cricket. With an average of over 60 and 2 centuries along to brag about, Amla would’ve been the most looked after player in the IPL 2018 but Kings XI decided not to retain him and for many, that was the biggest surprise.

3. Ravichandran Ashwin

Chennai Super Kings is making a comeback in the upcoming IPL 2018 after a sad banishment of 2 long years and Fans are super excited to see their favorite players in yellow-jersey once again.

CSK managed to retain most of their star players like MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and Ravindra Jadeja but the star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was shown No-Love by the CSK authorities and was not retained which is quite heartbroken.

Even Ashwin stated that he was disappointed after the auctions because he was there for 10 years. The main reason behind not retaining Ashwin as stated by the think-tank of CSK Stephen Fleming “We went into the auction knowing our cap for Ashwin will not be more than Rs. 4 crores, knowing it will be a lot more than 4”.

Anyways, Kings XI Punjab managed to get the star off-spinner for a wobbling 7.6 Cr Rs into their squad.

4. Chris Gayle

As IPL 2018 Date and Time are announced, the anticipation continues to grow furthermore and we have a bad news for RCB fans, Chris Gayle won’t be a part of the RCB squad for the upcoming IPL 2018.

5. Lasith Malinga

Sri Lankan pace-factory Lasith Malinga, who has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League has been released from the Mumbai Indians squad and has remained unsold. Malinga has some of the best bowling records in the IPL history, the only bowler to take more than 150 IPL wickets.

The lead wicket-taker for a single team in the tournament history and second highest wicket-taker in the T20s, these are some of the numbers behind Malinga’s very successful career with the Mumbai Indians and has been part of the four-time IPL title-winning squad.

The main reason behind Mumbai not retaining Malinga is the abundance of options they have when it comes to player retention. While Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Hardik Pandya were certain to be retained, Mumbai went for Krunal Pandya and Keiron Pollard in the RTMs because they both provide all-rounder options and with a stipulation to only retain five players put Malinga out of the picture.

But the main reason was that Malinga is stuck in the twilight of his career and not in his peak anymore plus he also has fitness issues so maybe it didn’t seem wise to Mumbai to spend on him.
