IPL Season 1 Winners: Rajasthan Royals (2008)

The first season of the Indian Premier League was also the most entertaining from the very first match. There were big dogs in the yard like Chennai and Mumbai, so nobody expected Rajasthan to come out on top. But they did became the inaugural season champions.

Rajasthan proved everyone wrong with their all rounding performances. The team was then led by legendary Australian leg spinner Shane Warner and they defeated Chennai Super Kings by 3 wickets in the final match played at DY Patil Stadium. Yusuf Pathan for his match-winning knock was chosen Man of the Match.

IPL Season 2 Winners: Hyderabad Deccan Chargers(2009)

Former Hyderabad franchise called the Hyderabad Deccan Chargers won the second season of the IPL. The team was then owned by the Deccan Chronicles Holding Ltd. The tournament was very competitive as it was unpredictable.

The second season of the IPL was played at Johannesburg, South Africa due to Lok Sabha elections in India. Hyderabad was led by the Australian legend Adam Gilchrist and they defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 6 runs to become the champions. Anil Kumble was picked as the Man of the Match.

IPL Season 3 Winners: Chennai Super Kings (2010)

The sleeping giant of the IPL finally woke up and with a bang. Chennai Super Kings led by the “Captain Cool” MS Dhoni won the 3rd season and their first IPL trophy after getting knocked out by the hands of Rajasthan in the 1st season’s final.

In the finals played at Chennai, CSK defeated Mumbai by 22 runs to become the IPL champions. Suresh Raina for his match-winning knock of 57 runs was chosen as the Man of the Match while the legend in legends Sachin Tendulkar became the Man of the tournament. This was Chennai’s first IPL trophy amongst the couple more to come.

IPL Season 4 Winners: Chennai Super Kings (2011)

Like it or not but Chennai has proved on countless occasions that they are the best IPL team in the history. In the first 4 IPL seasons, they had 3 final appearances. They won the first title in 2010 and the second the following year and became the first and only IPL team to do so. This season was different from the induction of 2 more teams.

The final match was played between Chennai and Royal Challengers Bangalore where CSK defeated them by 57 runs. Murali Vijay for his contribution of 58 runs when team needed the most became the Man of the Match whereas, Chris Gayle became the player of the tournament.

IPL Season 5 Winners: Kolkata Knight Riders (2012)

Just like their owner Shahrukh Khan, Kolkata Knight Riders has also been a big success, with their first major success coming at the 5th season of the IPL where they won the IPL title. Former champions Chennai once again reached the finals in quest of the title, but KKR stole their probable 3rd back to back title glory.

Gautam Gambhir was the captain of the Kolkata at that time and Trevor Bayliss was their head coach. In the final match KKR defeated CSK by 5 wickets. Manvinder Bisla who scored 89 in 48 balls was chosen as the Man of the Match while Sunil Narine for his all rounding performances became Man of the tournament.

IPL Season 6 Winners: Mumbai Indians (2013)

Chennai Super Kings once again reached all the way to the finals in quest of their 3rd title but they couldn’t penetrate the Mumbai wall this time. Whereas Mumbai Indians went on to win their first IPL title.

Mumbai Indians owner is also the richest Asian businessman Mukesh Ambani and his family manages the team. Rohit “Hitman” Sharma was their skipper and Mahela Jayawardane was their head coach and together they led Blue warriors to the much deserved title victory.

In the final match against CSK, Mumbai defeated them by 23 runs to become the IPL champions. Keiron Pollard became the Man of the Match while Shane Watson was chosen Man of the tournament.

IPL Season 7 Winners: Kolkata Knight Riders (2014)

Gautam Gambhir led Kolkata Knight Riders to win their second title in 2014. With Gautam as captain and Jacques Kallis as the head coach, KKR were invincible that year. The final match was played between KKR and Kings XI Punjab at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium where KKR defeated Kings by 3 wickets.

Manish Pandey became the Man of the Match for his match winning knock of 94 runs in 50 balls. Punjab’s all rounder Glenn Maxwell was chosen as the Man of the tournament.

IPL Season 8 Winners: Mumbai Indians (2015)

One of the most successful team in the IPL history Mumbai Indians won their second title in 2015. Their opponents in the finals were once again Chennai Super Kings. The match was played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata where Mumbai defeated Chennai by 41 runs to becaome the IPL 2015 champions.

Rohit Sharma was as good as captain as he was individually as a player that season. He scored 50 runs off just 26 balls in the final match to become Man of the Match while Andre Russell was chosen as the Man of the tournament.

IPL Season 9 Winners: Sunrisers Hyderabad (2016)

The successful franchise of Hyderabad, The Deccan Chargers were dissolved and the new Hyderabad franchise called the Sunrisers Hyderabad was introduced with world class players, better direction and better mindset and world class coach in Tom Moody. SRH led by David Warner went on to becoming the champions of 9th season of IPL.

In the IPL 2016 finals, Sunrisers Hyderabad faced RCB and defeated them in a breathtaking match by 8 runs. Ben Cutting who made 39 runs and picked up 2 wickets was chosen as the Man of the Match while Virat Kohli became the Man of the tournament. In season 9, Chennai and Rajasthan were stripped off from playing in IPL for 2 years so they didn’t participated.

IPL Season 10 Winners: Mumbai Indians (2017)

Mumbai Indians won the 10th season of the IPL and became the most successful team in the IPL history. Rohit Sharma led squad went on to winning their third title in 2017 against CSK replacement Rising Pune Supergiants and defeated them in the most exciting and entertaining IPL final ever by just 1 run.

Krunal Pandya contributed a must needed 47 runs in the final match and became the Man of the Match. While, English all rounder Ben Stokes was chosen as Man of the tournament.

IPL Season 11 Winners: Chennai Super Kings (2018)

So, last year was CSK and Rajasthan’s comeback year after not participating in IPL for two years straight. But CSK showed that they are the best IPL team for a reason. From the very start of the tournament, they were super intimidating and dominated everyone. They went on to become the 3 times champions and tied the record of Mumbai Indians.

“Captain Cool” MS Dhoni brought his brilliance to the field every time he stepped in. With players like Shane Watson and Suresh Raina, CSK dominated over every other team. In the final match, CSK defeated SRH by 8 wickets. Shane Watson’s magnificent 117 runs got him the Man of the match prize and Sunil Narine was chosen as the Player of the tournament.
